The Office of State Representative
Sonya M. Harper
The Office of Illinois State Representative Sonya M. Harper is seeking candidates for a Chief of Staff. The COS is responsible for completing, managing and overseeing all district operations. This position implements policy and community objectives, strategies and operating plans for the Representative's district office.
Duties:


  • Manage the daily operations of the Representative's district office, the Representative's schedule and supervises staff and volunteers.
  • Interact with the public, constituents, community groups, and others on behalf of the Representative in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Receive complaints and inquiries from the public, constituents, community groups and others to research and provide or make necessary referrals to the appropriate government office/agency for resolution.
  • Participate in meetings and events with and/or on behalf of the Representative as needed.
  • Maintain open and confidential communication with the Representative and other colleagues.
  • Maintain confidentiality on all issues when working on assignments and issues discussed during meetings.
  • Organize meetings and events for the Representative with the public, state agencies, local organizations, elected officials, and others.
  • Schedule appointments, maintain calendar, and keep the Representative informed.
  • Review/monitor media sources to keep the Representative up to date on current issues and search for information that may benefit or affect the Representative and their constituents.
  • Understand and competently operate the legislative computer system, tracking the progression of the Representative's bills and resolutions through the legislative process.
  • Maintain close communication with the Springfield office.
  • Update and oversee all office communications including but not limited to social media, website, and newsletters.
  • Accept performance-based criticism and direction.
  • Work a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends.
  • Exhibit a high level of professionalism in conduct, work ethics, and appearance.
  • Complete all other duties assigned by the Representative.

    Education/Experience
    A minimum of a bachelor's degree or five to ten years of related experience or training in management and/or legislative or equivalent similar experience. Prior experience working for an elected official is viewed favorably.
    Skills and Knowledge Required

    • Strong writing skills, preferably with AP style knowledge.
    • Experience managing and prioritizing multiple tasks both independently and as part of a team.
    • Computer proficiency; ability to work with data and social media preferred.
    • Professional demeanor and the ability to adapt and work with different or difficult personalities.
    • A demonstrated interest in state government, politics and policy, current affairs, public service or non-profit work, particularly in Democratic politics.
    • Provide necessary organization, supervisory leadership, and motivation to manage the district office.
    • Ability to research and analyze relevant constituent and legislative issues, track legislation, and prepare member briefings and material.
    • Exhibit a high level of professionalism and maintain confidentiality.

      Salary
      Compensation based on experience and education.
      Full-time position based in district office.
